There is a strange quietness about tonight
It is the quietness of the absence of wind
And in this land so close to the wild Atlantic Ocean ~ that is rather unusual
We know of the stillness before a storm
Or the quietness we experience on some rare days when not a blade of grass is stirring
Or the stillness after a thunderstorm when only the blackbird sings
and nothing moves
But tonight it is a quietness all of its own
it woke me up
Windstill – that is a fine compound noun. Very evocative.

Oeps Tish, I thought this was an English word but it seems that I was thinking with my Flemish mind, and in fact I was not thinking at all because it was pure inspiration in the middle of the night and half awake ๐ But yes it means no wind at all and it does carry a certain stillness that is very noticeable I think. Thank you Tish.

Marvellous however you came by it. It made me think of the ancient Anglo-Saxon poets who also expressed themselves with striking compound nouns and adjectives.

Thank you Tish, that’s interesting, I must say that I am not familiar with Anglo-Saxon poets or poetry though I have heard of Beowulf.

Some good examples in Beowulf: ‘heavy with friend-loss’; ‘but war-death took them’; ‘with every step-stagger’

Yes these words have a lovely sound to them and make a lot of sense. Thank you Tish, great to learn something more about this.

If Shakespeare could invent new words, itโs fine for you to adapt from Flemish ๐.
I had to smile when you said the lack of wind woke you up!

Thanks Helen that’s good so ๐ Yes we are so used to it being very windy and noisy as a result especially at night here in West Cork. We also live very exposed.
