AUTUMN JOBS IN THE GARDEN

Today was tidy up day in the garden, among other things. I finished planting out the salad leaves, and beetroot. Then I sowed, also in the cold frame, curled parsley, and some winter lettuce, seeds that I had over from last year, we shall see what comes up. I followed this with tidying the garden, putting away a lot of summer things into the potting shed, also took measurements as need to get a light tar paper to attach to some of the outside of the shed. It is one of the jobs that I have had on the list for over a year but did not get around to. I finished outside with putting some stray pots of herbs like basil into the cold frame to overwinter. The table and chairs which we only used once or twice during the bad summer remain on the patio for the moment, not that I expect to use them to eat outside, but because there is a container of sweet peas on top and some other plants.

I am reading this brilliant memoir by Joy Larkcom, it’s a large work, so interesting.  She fills the pages with so much information about the history of vegetable growing in Europe.  She also talks about the year she and her young family spent travelling around Europe in the seventies, exploring what vegetables were being grown and used and writing about this, also collecting seeds and much more.  I have now nearly read half of the book and am still enthralled and learning some bits.  It is also interesting to see how the author discovered growing organically.  At the moment, every night I go to sleep with my head full of these stories, it is a great ‘down to earth’ sort of thing to read after the long discussions with my partner about the current state of the world.

Soup being cooked, vegetables copped and heaped up with dandelion, nettles, garlic, cumin and other herbs and spices.  Next the resulting goodness, very tasty, this is food I really like.

HINT OF SPRING & GARDEN COMING ALIVE

Today was a lovely spring-like day, sunshine and about 6 degrees Celsius. I found daffodils up and budding to flower, also crocuses, primroses, and the borage, lemon balm and comfrey plants are sprouting and showing young new fresh green shoots – lovely. I did some mulching, and my partner started to take down a branch of the chestnut tree. I am also starting a few seeds inside, at this time it will just be sweet peas, but soon vegetables will follow. Then I picked some more produce from the garden to cook dinner. All in all it was a lovely day with a definite ‘spring’ feeling about it, putting a big smile on our faces.

PERMACULTURE COURSE ON-LINE

Just today I have started an on-line course in permaculture, got the information in my email and thought I would try it out. Well I was so impressed after watching the first lecture that I am already looking forward to tomorrow when I will listen to lecture 02. I went for a stroll through my garden today, it was lovely and sunny, I needed to check what is going on, and I see that there are quite a few plants doing very well.  The leeks growing together with the feverfew, growing right through the winter months.

Here a thyme plant that had a Foxglove plant growing beside it, I will move that one in the flower section as it becomes very large.

Garlic is coming up well, and beetroot still need to be harvested and used.

And more work in this patch, deciding what to grow where.  The Borage plants are strong already, the flowers will be good to attract bees into the garden.

A MILD WINTER’S EVENING

Today has been very mild (around 6 degrees Celsius, with sunshine, and a little drizzle this afternoon. I was able to go out and give some attention to the garden. There were a few Kale that still needed planting out, so I did that, and discovered that the soil is improving, it has become more crumbly, though in places still very wet. Well I mulched a bit around the newly planted Kale. Took in some bamboo sticks that were still sticking in the soil, and checked how the garlic are doing. I also still harvested some beetroot which is nice and fat. There were two Robins in the garden with me, coming quite close to pick some creatures out of the soil. This evening we were treated to an amazing sunset once again, which I’d like to share with everyone.
